The Aussie starter kit (Kai-tested)

Kai-tested · Four things that stayed

The Aussie starter kit

Four things Kai actually used. Not a wishlist. Not a roundup. The crate he trained in, the rake that actually pulls undercoat, the spray I use between baths, and the robot that keeps the floors from looking like a dog lives here.

If you just brought an Aussie home, start here. If someone sent you this link, this is the short list. The free Owner’s Kit (feeding chart, grooming schedule, vet checklist, first-year timeline) is the email below.

The Aussie Owner’s Kit. Free.

Four short sheets I wish I’d had on day one: feeding by age and weight, a grooming schedule, a vet checklist with MDR1 questions, and the first-year training timeline. Short. Useful. No long newsletter.

The four

MidWest iCrate

Kai-tested

Folding wire crate with divider.

This is the crate Kai was trained in, and he liked it — went in on his own, slept in it, treated it as his spot instead of a punishment. The divider panel is the reason to buy it for a puppy: you make the space small while they’re small, then move the panel back as they grow, instead of buying two crates. It folds flat for the car.

The honest partIt’s a wire crate. The tray rattles when a grown Aussie turns around in it at 2 a.m., and it’s not built for a dog who has decided to get out. Good crate training matters more than the crate — if the dog hasn’t been taught to settle in it, no crate fixes that.

Maxpower Planet Original Pet Grooming Rake

Kai-tested

Deshedder · double-sided undercoat rake

An Aussie has two coats, and the bottom one comes out in sheets twice a year and in tufts the rest of the time. This rake gets down to that undercoat without scratching Kai, and he tolerates it better than any brush I tried before it. For what it costs, I was surprised how much came out — and how much less ended up on the couch afterward.

The honest partIt does not stop shedding. It relocates the undercoat — from the dog to the floor, your sleeves, and the air. Use it outside or over something you can shake out. Nothing stops an Aussie from shedding; this just decides where the hair lands.

Arm & Hammer for Pets Ultra Fresh Waterless Bath Spray

Kai-tested

Between-baths spray · White Jasmine

Aussies shouldn’t be bathed every week — it dries the coat out — but they also roll in things. This is what I reach for in between. Spray, work it in with your hands, towel, done. Kai comes back smelling like a dog who’s been cared for instead of a dog who’s been in a pond.

The honest partIt’s not a bath. It buys you a few days, not a week, and it doesn’t do anything about mud that’s already dried in. If you don’t like a jasmine scent, pick another scent in the same line.

Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 Robot Vacuum & Mop

Kai-tested

Robot vacuum + mop with self-emptying dock

Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you get an Aussie: the hair is a daily event, not a seasonal one. This runs while I’m at work, and I come home to floors that don’t look like a dog lives here. It vacuums and mops, empties itself into the dock, and Kai stopped caring about it within a week. Of everything on this page, this is the one that changed my day-to-day the most. Lifesaver is the right word.

The honest partThe price. This is a real purchase, not a starter-kit impulse, and the dock takes up a permanent corner of a room. It’s also not magic — it won’t pull hair out of the couch, and you still need to keep the floor clear of the things a dog leaves on it. If you have an Aussie and hardwood or tile, it’s the one people skip and then wish they hadn’t.
