I bought the wrong harness. Then I started keeping a log.
Kai is my red merle Aussie, born July 2024. The leash clip on his long orange leash broke at about six months — it was clipped to the harness; the harness held. Brass clips are the lesson. The cheap Maxpower Planet undercoat rake from Amazon, of all things, is the tool I still reach for — $10.88, and I loved it. This page is that log — not a roundup of brands I invented a test for.

One failure. One quiet win.
This is the origin story of the site. Every five-star roundup I read talked about webbing and patterns, not the one piece of hardware that actually broke.
The leash clip broke.
Not the webbing, and not the harness — the harness held. The clip on the long orange leash let go while it was clipped to the harness, with an adolescent Aussie hitting the end of the leash. I am not naming the brand, because the lesson wasn't "avoid Brand X" — it was stop trusting plastic hardware on a herding dog.

The Maxpower Planet rake worked.
It is the Maxpower Planet Original Pet Grooming Rake, bought on Amazon in March 2025 for $10.88 with my own money. Amazing for the price. Honest flaw: it does not stop shedding — it moves undercoat from the couch to the trash. It is the one tool I reach for without thinking during coat blow. Color was never the problem on the leash. Hardware was. Next leash, I looked at the metal first.

If I could put one sentence on a hang tag, it would be this: look at the clip before you look at the pattern. Brass or other solid metal. A working-breed dog will find the weak point. I learned that on the clip.

No invented "Kai's pick" brands. Where he used something, I say so. Where he didn't, you get the buying filter I use now.
2 Hounds Design Freedom No-Pull, 1" medium.
I can name this one, because I have bought it more than once. The Freedom is the harness Kai actually wears: Y-front so his shoulders move, velvet-lined strap that hasn't rubbed him raw, and metal hardware instead of the plastic that taught me this lesson in the first place. When the first one got outgrown and beaten up, I reordered the same thing in 1" medium. That is the whole review — I re-bought it.

The long orange leash is the one that failed — the clip let go at about six months while it was clipped to the harness, and the harness held. I'm not sending anyone to buy that leash. What I shop for now is the snap first: the Viper K9 biothane 15ft with a solid brass snap. Biothane wipes clean after a muddy field session, and brass doesn't shear the way that plastic-cored clip did.

This one I can badge now: the SportPet XL rolling crate in gray. Kai is a stand-up-and-turn-around 50-pounder and the XL gives him that without turning a room into a kennel. The casters are the part I didn't know I needed — I can roll it out to sweep under it instead of dragging it. It's his settle spot, not a yard.

The questions I get asked most.
So which harness should I buy?
The 2 Hounds Design Freedom No-Pull in 1" medium is the one on my dog, and I bought it again rather than shop around. Metal hardware, Y-front, and it fits an Aussie chest without pinning the shoulders. That's a named answer because I actually paid for it twice.
Is a collar enough for city walks?
For Kai, a harness is how we walk. A collar is ID and backup. The older harness-vs-collar post is still up if you want the long version — it's an older post, not a new test.
Do I need the expensive crate?
You need the right size and a dog who thinks of it as a bed. We use the SportPet XL rolling crate and the wheels have earned their keep. Price follows construction — but size and where it lives in the house matter more.
What about "indestructible" toys?
Treat that word as marketing. Herding dogs are a different problem. Rotate, watch, and throw away the ones that fail. No toy on this page is wearing a Kai-tested badge I didn't earn.
