Herding breeds carry specific genetic risks. All three are screenable, two with a cheek swab at home.
MDR1 drug sensitivity
A gene mutation that makes several routine medications dangerous. Roughly half of Aussies carry at least one copy. One DNA test tells you forever.
TEST: ONCE, LOW COSTHip dysplasia
Joint structure is genetic. Reputable breeders OFA-test parents, and if yours didn't, early screening changes how you exercise and insure.
SURGERY IF MISSED: EXPENSIVE, PER HIPEye conditions (CEA and cataracts)
Merle-to-merle breeding raises risk sharply. A CERF eye exam catches most issues before symptoms show.
