What Kai Actually Eats

I cook his food. Here's the bowl.

Most review sites rank kibble they've never opened. Kai eats a bowl I make myself — lean protein, real carbs — with one kibble mixed in for balance. That kibble is the only food on this site wearing the Kai-tested badge, because it's the only one that's earned it.

Honest note: home-cooked diets need proper balancing — that's exactly why a complete kibble stays in the mix, and why the full recipe post covers portions and what a vet will tell you to watch.

The Aussie food showdown.

Six quality foods compared on protein, cost per day for a 50 lb active Aussie, and who each one fits. One of these is mixed into Kai's bowl every single day — that one gets the Kai-tested badge. The rest are research-ranked, and marked as such.

The Aussie Owner's Kit. Free.

The four reference sheets I wish I'd had on day one: a feeding chart by age and weight, a grooming schedule, a vet-visit checklist with MDR1 questions, and the first-year training timeline.

The Method

Two badges. No blur between them.

Most review sites imply they tested everything. With one dog, that's impossible — so every recommendation on this site carries one of two marks.

Kai-tested

Kai actually used it

Weeks or months of daily use with my own dog. Chewed, washed, pulled on, shed all over. I report what held up and what went in the trash.

Sample log: Orange leash — clip broke at about six months, clipped to the harness. The harness held.
Food switch — stool quality logged 14 days.
Undercoat rake — survived spring blowout.
Researched

Ranked from evidence

Ingredient and spec analysis, vet and breeder sources, owner-reported durability patterns. Solid guidance — clearly labeled as not first-hand.

Sources used: AAFCO profiles, OFA data,
breed-club health surveys, long-term owner reports.
No brand ever pays for placement.
Know Before the Vet Visit

Three checks that can save an Aussie's life.

Herding breeds carry specific genetic risks. All three are screenable — two with a cheek swab at home.

MDR1 drug sensitivity

A gene mutation that makes several routine medications dangerous. Roughly half of Aussies carry at least one copy. One DNA test tells you forever.

TEST: ~$80 · ONCE

Hip dysplasia

Joint structure is genetic. Reputable breeders OFA-test parents — and if yours didn't, early screening changes how you exercise and insure.

SURGERY IF MISSED: $4–7K PER HIP

Eye conditions (CEA / cataracts)

Merle-to-merle breeding raises risk sharply. A CERF eye exam catches most issues before symptoms show.

EXAM: ~$50–90 ANNUAL

Who's Behind This

Kai's human. Kai is the boss.

I brought Kai home in 2024 and did what every new Aussie owner does: bought the wrong leash (the clip on the long orange one broke at about six months — clipped to the harness; the harness held), the wrong brush, and food that didn't agree with him — because every site claimed everything was five stars.

This site is the resource I couldn't find: one owner keeping an honest testing log, telling you what actually survived a working-breed dog, and labeling anything I haven't personally tested.

Kai's daily field testing continues on Instagram.
