The Robot Vacuum That Survived Kai’s Coat

I’m Leny. Kai is the boss. Red merle Aussie, born July 2024. If you searched best robot vacuum for Australian Shepherd hair, I can name the one that earned the word lifesaver.

The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 vacuums and mops. Kai-tested. A lifesaver with Kai. I am not going to pretend it is a personality. It is a machine that runs when I would rather not crawl the baseboards with a handheld after every blow.

Honest flaw, said first: it does not stop shedding. It does not replace the Maxpower rake. On blow weeks I still empty the bin like it is a second trash can. Hair still wraps. The couch still gets a lint roller. The robot is how the floor stops being a second dog.

The floor problem

Kai leaves himself on everything. Cream and cinnamon on dark clothes. A halo on the crate pad. A comet on the couch. The floor is where it all settles when I am tired of the lint roller. I can bag the bathroom towel after a Maxpower session. I cannot personally patrol every corner, every night, and still be a person.

That is the job I hired the Dreame for. Not “smart home.” Not a gadget unboxing. Hair. Dust that is mostly hair. The mop side is the bonus when paws come in wet. Kai-tested

What “lifesaver” actually meant

I used that word in my notes because I meant it, not because a brand asked. After a bath-and-Shernbao night, or a blow-week rake, the bathroom looks like a second dog and the hallway is catching the overflow. Running the Dreame is the difference between “I will get to it” and the hair becoming weather.

It still needs me. Empty the bin. Check the brush roll when it sounds angry. During a real coat blow I do not trust a “set it and forget it” fantasy. Aussie undercoat is not a light dusting of lab hair. It is wool. Wool clumps. Clumps choke things. I look.

I will not invent a lab test about Pascals and Pa. I will say: it picks up what Kai drops well enough that I stopped dreading the floor. That is the review.

The mop side matters more than I expected. Wet paws after a walk, a drip from the water bowl, the bathroom overflow that is not quite a puddle. Vacuum only and you still get a film. I am not going to write a floor-plan. I will say the machine goes where the hair goes, and I keep cables and the long line off the ground so it has a job instead of a snack.

I empty on a schedule during blow weeks, not when the app nags me into a personality. If the roll sounds wrapped, I unwrap it. Aussie hair makes a felt bracelet. That is not a defect unique to Dreame. That is wool. I would rather clean a roll than pretend a $10 rake finished the house.

The grooming stack the robot cannot replace

Order in this house: TropiClean bath when it is bath day, Shernbao until he is dry, Maxpower rake, Christensen slicker, Pettom comb, bag the pile, then the Dreame. In between baths, the Arm & Hammer spray so I am not washing him for a sidewalk. The robot is last on purpose.

Crate hair is its own weather. The MidWest iCrate is the crate Kai loved for training. Great for training. The pad still grows a halo. I shake it out. The robot gets what falls. Travel days, the SportPet rolling XL is the crate we have used. I do not expect a robot to follow us on the road.

Hair, harness, food

After a real deshed, re-check the harness. Coat blow lies about fit. Hardware lesson: orange leash clip ~6 months, clipped to the harness, harness held. Brass after that. Leash. Long line. Harness.
