What actually changes your week with an Aussie is the drive and the shedding.
Aussie puppies come in black, red, blue merle and red merle, with or without white and copper. Color tells you nothing about temperament.
Coat and shed reality
Puppy coat is softer. The adult double coat comes in waves. Brush early so handling feels normal. When the undercoat blows, I use the Maxpower undercoat rake. Amazing product, great price. More in the brush and rake guide.
Eyes and expression
Brown, blue, amber and odd eyes all show up in the breed. Eye color doesn’t predict personality. Watch how the puppy moves and explores instead.
Build and growth
Aussies are medium-sized athletes. Puppies look leggy, then fill in. Protect growing joints with short sessions and no repetitive high-impact “sports camp” for babies.
Ears may tip or prick during teething stages. Tail length varies with docking laws and breeder choices, so ask before you commit.
Ask about health testing
Ask breeders about health testing on their lines, including MDR1, which matters in this breed. Kai is not MDR1 tested, so nothing here is a result for him.
Looks aren’t the lifestyle

What not to obsess over
Perfect show outline in a household pet. Coat “fluff factor.” The working brain and the weekly schedule matter more than a color chart.
Physical traits aren’t a personality decoder. How a puppy moves and how fast he calms down after excitement tell you more than eye color.
Mats start in armpits, pants, and behind ears. Check those first. Skipping them is how you end up with scissors and a bad mood.
Save long-line work for later on the Viper long line. Daily walks are on the Freedom harness. It works well, but Kai has chewed through a few; the chew warranty (a small fee per replacement) is well worth it. Pick a dog for the brain and the schedule. The coat comes with it.
