Kai’s Coat Blow: The Deshedder That Earned a Spot (and What Still Covers the Couch)

Kai is the boss. He’s a red merle Australian Shepherd, born July 2024. This is not a four-brand grid.

The first time his undercoat let go, I thought something was wrong with him. There was a halo on the crate pad. There was a second halo on the living-room couch. There was a third on the back seat of the car, and on a city day it rode a sidewalk with us like a public document. I was wearing black. I am always wearing black. Kai is cream and cinnamon and white, and he leaves himself on everything I own.

I bought the Maxpower Planet Original Pet Grooming Rake — a double-sided deshedding and dematting undercoat rake — on Amazon in March 2025 for $10.88, with my own money, and I loved it. Amazing for the price, and it does an incredible job on Kai. An undercoat rake, used on a double coat indoors, moves fur from the couch to the trash. That is the win. That is also the honest flaw: it does not stop shedding.

The couch problem

Kai did not fail a meadow test. He failed a house-plus-city-days test.

A couch. A crate pad that looks like a second dog by March. A furnace filter that eats fur and then recirculates it as weather. Dark clothes. A bathroom where I try to towel him before he does a victory lap on the furniture. On city days the coat comes with us onto the sidewalk.

How an Aussie coat actually sheds

Two systems. Mix them up and you irritate skin, then blame the breed.

The undercoat is the dense wool close to the skin. It blows in sheets, hardest in spring and again as the weather turns. That is the tumbleweed. That is what the deshedder is for. A little still comes out year-round. House heat does not cancel biology. It just moves the calendar.

The topcoat is the longer guard hair. A slicker catches what is already loose. A metal comb finds what the slicker missed in the pants, the ruff, the ears. Own only a slicker and you leave the insulation in place. Drag a deshedder across a dry thin spot and you are gardening someone who did not ask.

Shaving a double coat is a researched bad idea. I have not shaved Kai. The coat is the thermostat and the sun hat. Clip it short and you can wreck how it grows back. On a merle you also get more pink skin. Pink skin plus a noon city sidewalk is a sun problem, not a fashion problem. Researched Baths help a blow along. They do not replace the tool. The deshedder that earned a spot

Session length is “until the sheets slow down,” not a timer I invented for a caption. Blow week: a full bathroom sit with a podcast. Maintenance week: ten minutes and a smaller pile. I do him on a towel on the bathroom floor. We have a tub, a door I can close, and a trash can. Not a grooming table.

Fur piled on the towel, my lap, the grout, the inside of the tool. I pull packed undercoat out of the teeth every few strokes or the tool becomes a felt brick. Then I bag it, lint-roll my shirt, vacuum, and still find a comet on the couch. That sequence is the review.

What it did well: undercoat in sheets. Less tumbleweed along the baseboards the next morning. The furnace filter is not eating a second dog every week. Kai’s coat lies flatter after, which is not the same as stopped shedding.

What I learned the hard way: pressure. Ears, armpits, inner thighs, thin flanks — same hand as the thick ruff and the skin pinked. I slowed down. I kept the tool flatter. I stopped when he shifted away. Overuse can irritate. The honest flaw is bigger than technique. The tool does not stop shedding. It moves fur from the couch to the trash. Researched: the rest of the kit I would buy

This table is categories. Not a fake “Kai loved this slicker” winner. The only Kai-tested row is the Maxpower Planet undercoat rake. Groomers who work double coats go slicker, then undercoat tool, then metal comb. A salon write-up I read used that sequence and asked you to book. Fair. They have a table and a high-velocity dryer. I have a bathroom. I stole the order, not a product list, and I did not fake a salon test at home.

Order of operations in this house, stolen from that groomer sequence and made small:

1. Towel off if he’s damp. Wait until he’s dry. Do not deshed wet skin.
2. Slicker the surface so you are not packing loose topcoat into the undercoat tool.
3. Deshedder on the thick places — ruff, back, thighs — light hand on thin places.
4. Metal comb through pants, ears, and anywhere the tool skipped. If the comb hangs up, that is a mat starting, not “character.”
5. Bag the fur. Lint-roll yourself. Vacuum the bathroom before you reopen the rest of the house.

Schedule: blow weeks vs the rest of the year

Spring and fall are not optional. Weekly through those stretches, sometimes twice if the towel looks like a second dog. The rest of the year I still do a shorter pass so mats do not set up behind the ears. “I’ll wait until it gets bad” is how you spend a Sunday swearing at a comb.

After a real deshed, re-check the harness. Coat blow makes straps look tighter than they are. Hardware lesson: the orange leash clip failed ~6 months — best leash for Australian Shepherds. The harness that belongs with it is researched, not a Kai-tested failure. Pick a room you can close. I do not deshed in the living room anymore. The couch voted.

Food and shedding — I will not sell you a miracle

Kai’s bowl is 90% lean ground beef, white rice, sweet potato, eggs sometimes, plus Orijen Six Fish mixed in. I will not claim Six Fish cured shedding. Coat quality is food, thyroid, season, brushing, and luck. Skin issues belong with a vet. The bowl is on Food. A dull, brittle coat can be a health problem. I have not invented a Kai diagnosis. What I will not recommend

I will not recommend shaving him for summer. Double coats are the AC unit. A merle with more pink skin does not need a closer haircut and a noon sidewalk.

I only badge a brand Kai-tested when he used that exact tool long enough to earn it. The Maxpower Planet rake earned it — and the couch is still a couch. I will not fake a home test of a high-velocity dryer. Salon tool. Mentioned so you know it exists.
