Training Kai is less “school” and more daily conversation. Short asks, clear pay, then play. Long lectures bounce off an Aussie puppy.
These dogs are smart enough to work you. If your timing is late, they learn the wrong picture. If sessions drag, they invent chaos for fun. If you want the why behind it, I wrote about how smart Aussie puppies are.
Tips that stuck
Keep it short. Five to ten minutes. Two micro-sessions beat one long grind.
Mark the moment. Behavior happens, then mark, then pay. Digging in the pouch while he already sat teaches noise, not sit.
Use food that matters. Soft bites from Kai’s go-to treats. Dry kibble chunks slow the rate.
Train tired-smart, not over-tired. A little movement first helps. A fried puppy mouthing everything is not ready for precision.
Practice where life happens. Sit for the bowl. Wait at doors. Name before the street. Sidewalk manners on the Freedom harness, which works well. It isn’t chew-proof, but it comes with a chew warranty for a small replacement fee.
Long-line come before off-leash fantasy. Viper long line for distance work once he was ready. Not in week one.
What to avoid
Harsh corrections that shut him down. Repeating cues five times. Ending sessions at peak frustration. Using “come” as a trap out of fun.
More method: positive reinforcement notes. Command list: basic obedience. Everything else is on Training.
Thirty days won’t do it
Early training builds habits. It won’t give you a finished adult dog in a month. Stay and distraction work are ongoing. That is normal.
Treats, harness and leash we use are listed in the Owner’s Kit.
Weekly rhythm
Most days: two micro-sessions plus real-life cues. One longer line or park day when his energy was high.
Keep a treat pouch on you at the times that matter, like going out the door, meals and leash on, so you aren’t digging in the pantry while the moment passes.
Potty, short play, then train. Five clean reps beat fifty sloppy ones. More method: positive reinforcement notes.
Rest days still include potty walks and a short brain game. Total shutdown makes the next day louder with an Aussie.
