Kai’s energy did not arrive as a cute “busy puppy” setting. It comes in bursts: zoomies after naps, herding ankles when bored, then a hard crash if the nap window gets missed. These days that herding drive goes into a ball in the yard, the best herding ball for an Australian Shepherd is his outdoor job.
Australian Shepherd puppies are working dogs in small bodies. Expect high drive, not a steady medium. Plan the day around outlets and rest, or the puppy invents jobs you will hate.
What the days looked like
Morning: potty, short walk or yard play, then food. A little training while the brain was fresh. Not a marathon.
Midday: enforced crate or quiet nap. Skipping this made evenings ugly. An over-tired Aussie looks “hyper” and is usually fried.
Evening: another movement block, walk on the Freedom harness, flirt-pole bursts, or a training game, then settle work. Don’t chase “tire him out forever.” You cannot outrun the breed with one long hike.
Mental work counts as energy
Five minutes of name, sit and find-it burned more edge than twenty minutes of mindless fetch. Soft bites from the Kai’s go-to treats rotation kept sessions short and clear.
Chew and lick work after exercise helped the landing. A stuffed Kong Classic after a walk beat leaving a wired puppy loose in the living room.
Honest limits
Puppy energy is not adult endurance. Joints are still growing. Skip repetitive jump-heavy “sports day” for a baby. Long-line park distance came later on the Viper long line, not week one. There’s more in how much exercise an Aussie puppy needs, including what to skip while joints grow.
If your household cannot give daily movement plus downtime structure, this breed will feel like a problem dog. That is a lifestyle mismatch, not a training failure.
Starter stack we use: Owner’s Kit. More training rhythm: Training.
Signals to read
Landshark mouthing, barking at nothing, and sudden “deafness” usually meant too much stimulation or too little sleep, not defiance. Reset with a potty trip and a crate nap before adding more play.
Puppy energy is uneven. One hour he looks like he could hike forever. Twenty minutes later he’s a mouthy landshark because the crate nap got skipped. Energy without recovery is not “more exercise needed.” It is a fried nervous system.
Rainy days still needed a plan: hallway recalls, find-it, short tug, then crate. Weather is not an excuse for zero outlets unless you enjoy remodeling your shoes. Soft bites from Kai’s go-to treats kept indoor brain work clear.
